A skilled master artist will mentor their apprentice for at least 100 hours of one-on-one time throughout the program year. Now entering its seventh year, over 130 people have participated in the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe HAAP program is vital because it really meets traditional artists where they live, and allows them to practice and teach as they want, where they want, and with whom they want,\u201d said Thomas Grant Richardson, director of the Center for Washington Cultural Tradition<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cFolklife is about understanding cultural traditions in context, but often arts programing has to decontextualize those traditions to present them elsewhere. The HAAP program allows traditional arts to thrive where they already live.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Folk and traditional arts practices are often learned informally in one-on-one settings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">and m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any practitioners lack the resources and network<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to pass on their skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Because <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and as a result,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> many traditions are at risk of being lost. In addition to both preserving traditional skills and generating income for the practitioners, the program also helps apprentices develop important leadership skills that will help them advocate for their communities. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many who have been part of the Heritage Arts Apprenticeship Program use their experience to create businesses centered on their traditional products, or better establish themselves as teaching artists or paid performers. But most importantly, folk and traditional artists and practices provide meaningful ways for people to connect with their past<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">build bridges to other communities in the present.\u00a0<\/span><span
